Special Events Glossary
Academic Awards Program (First – eighth grades) A few weeks before the end of the school year, students are recognized for their academic and athletic achievements during this afternoon program.
After School Homework Program (Fifth – eighth grades) This is an after school academic remedial program designed to help students improve their organizational and study skills, in turn, providing the opportunity for the students to achieve higher grades.
Athletics (Kindergarten-eighth grades) KCS feels that athletics are a great way for students to learn many life skills as well as develop coordination and learn about teamwork. Micro Soccer is available for students in kindergarten through fourth grades. Fifth through eighth grades have soccer, tennis, volleyball, basketball, baseball, softball, track and cheerleading available.
Back To School Night (Parents of Kindergarten – eighth grades) This takes place one evening early in the school year and allows parents to learn what a typical school day is like, meet the teachers and better understand what happens throughout the school year.
Chapel (Elementary and Middle School) Each Wednesday morning, students participate in either the elementary or middle school Chapel. This is a time of worship that may include singing, sharing of testimonies, and learning about how to grow in God and sharing God's love with others.
Charger Corp (Fifth – eighth grades) This student leadership organization meets once a month and focuses on service opportunities.
Class Parties (All grades) Four times per year, classes will conduct parties to celebrate fall, Christmas, Valentines and Easter.
Competitions, Academic KCS offers students several ways to advance their skills in various academic disciplines, both, within the classroom and beyond. Classroom level competitions are required of all students. Those students who achieve top honors within their class have the option of advancing on to local, state-wide and even national levels as they warrant. - Science Fair: required for all students in grades 4, 6 and 8. Optional for all other grades
- Spelling Bee: required for all students in all grades at the class level. Winners may advance to higher levels as they achieve.
- Speech Meet: Voluntary at the elementary level, required for all students in grades x, x, x and x.
- Math Olympics: optional for third through middle school students who excel in math.
Competitions, Fine Arts students who participate in art, band and/or choir will participate in various individual and group competitions each spring.
Drama Club (Fifth-eighth grades) Middle school students have the extra-curricular option of participating in our drama club. Depending on the particular presentation, it's possible that a particular drama will have need for younger students as well. This runs primarily in the winter and spring months after school and culminates with the official presentations on one or two evenings in late spring.
Early Dismissals From time to time, circumstances require that students be released early from school. The prime cause would be weather related issues but could also involve loss of water or heat within the school. KCS will give as much advanced notice as possible on the school website (www.kingswaychristianschool.com) and local TV and radio stations.
Eighth Grade Retreat Near the beginning of each school year, the eighth grade class retreats to an off-campus location to focus on the upcoming year and to set their goals and duties as being leaders of the school.
Eager Explorers (First - fourth grades) Eager Explorers meets after school once a month to 'explore' God's world through science experiments and hands-on activities.
Feast Day (Kindergarten – eighth grades) Celebrations can vary from year to year, but the focus is on learning first-hand how the Pilgrims celebrated the first Thanksgiving.
Field Day (Elementary and Middle School) Weather permitting, the last day of each school year culminates with a time of fun, grade- level athletic-type competitions. From balloon tosses to relay races, tug-o-war and much more, it's a great way to wrap-up the school year.
Field Trips (Preschool - eighth grades) Each fall and spring, each class takes a field trip to various locals.
Fine Arts Festival - TBA
Fundraisers (All grades) To help meet financial needs and develop new programs, KCS conducts two student-led fundraisers per year – usually one in the fall and the other during winter - and an adult golf scramble in the spring. We ask that everyone do their best to support these events as best they can so KCS can continue to grow and offer better programs for our students.
Grandparents' Day (Kindergarten - fourth grades) Each November, kindergarten through fourth grades host Grandparents' Day. This is a time for grandparents to visit the classroom, see what their grandchild is learning and enjoy a special program.

International Day (Seventh grade) One day is set aside (usually late April or early May) for seventh grade students to present to the rest of the student body what they've learned about another country. Students will dress the part and offer food that is based on the country they're representing along with facts and figures of that country.
ISTEP+ Testing (Third – eighth grades) As a state accredited school, all third through eighth grade students participate in the Indiana state-wide ISTEP+ testing. This is a two week period in September set aside by schools throughout the state to test student knowledge in various aspects of academic learning. It is very important if at all possible that students not miss this time since tests are very difficult to make up. It is also highly recommended that students get plenty of sleep each night, have a good breakfast each morning and report to school on time!
K-Kids Club (Fourth – sixth grades) KCS has teamed up with the local Kiwanis Club of Avon to offer K-Kids Club! This is an after school club that meets twice a month, and teaches students the importance of community service. Students fill the role of officers (President, Vice-President . . .) and plan the types of community service they will perform throughout the school year.
KCS-Fred Cook Golf Scramble (Adults) This is a parent-based fundraiser that takes place in early May and is a great time for parents & donors of KCS to get together and enjoy some friendly competition while raising funds for the school. Middle school students who help raise funds are welcome to participate as well!
KCS Nights Out This is a PTF-led event designed to raise funds for our Teachers of the Year Award. Almost everyone eats out from time to time, so KCS Nights Out are simply coordinating one particular night per month for everyone to converge on one particular restaurant with the restaurant pledging to donate-back a percentage of the proceeds! This is a great way to give mom the night off and help the school at the same time!
KCS Prayer Ministry Each Monday morning, parents, grandparents and friends collect teacher requests and bring them before the Father in prayer. This one hour session is a great way to support and grow the KCS program!
Kite Day (Kindergarten – fourth grades) This is simply a fun time in spring designed to promote school spirit and allows for great interaction between parents and children with some contests for largest & smallest kites and other categories.
Lunch Orders/Program (All full day students) The KCS lunch program utilizes area restaurants to provide for the daily lunches – one restaurant per day. Lunch order forms are sent home at the beginning of each week listing what will be provided the following week. Simply circle the days & lunches desired and return the order form with payment to the school before 9:00 Friday morning, and KCS will have your selections available that following week.
Middle School Prayer Breakfast (Fifth – eighth grades) Once a month, our middle school students are encouraged to attend the middle school prayer breakfast at 7:45 am. Students share in a simple breakfast and time of prayer before the school day begins. Dates are posted on the school website (www.kingswaychristianschool.com).
Parent-Teacher Conferences (All grades) KCS conducts two Parent-Teacher Conferences per year, one in the fall and the other in the spring. These are a great way for parents and teachers to communicate student progress and make any needed adjustments for a successful school year.
Parent-Teacher Fellowship (PTF) The group focuses on promoting parent, teacher and student relations through various events, including sponsoring the KCS Teacher of the Year awards each spring. Other activities include recognizing teachers birthdays with a monthly luncheon, KCS Nights Out at various restaurants, skating parties, babysitting classes, blood drives and more.
Professional Development Days/Teacher In-Service KCS sets aside 4 to 6 days per school year for teachers to focus on personal development. School will be dismissed early on these days – usually at 1:00.
Programs (Kindergarten – eighth grades) Our Christmas and spring programs are a popular time for students and parents alike. Each year, our elementary and middle school students take turns presenting one of these programs.
Registration- New/Open House. After a re-enrollment window for current KCS families has passed, new families are given opportunity to enroll for the following year and fill any openings that are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
- Re-registration. Shortly after the Christmas break, current KCS families are given the opportunity to re-enroll for the following school year before registration is opened up for new families.
Rilla Trout Memorial Scholarship Rilla Trout is a former KCS master teacher who, while one of the toughest teachers at KCS, was also the one who had the greatest number of former students come back to visit and thank her for her love and dedication to their success. After her passing, this memorial scholarship was formed to provide one KCS eighth grade graduate scholarship funds to their freshman year at a local Christian school.
School Closings/Delays (All grades) In the case of inclement weather, Kingsway Christian School will follow the decision of Avon Public Schools regarding delays and closings. Please check local radio or TV stations, or the KCS website for announcements.
School Pictures (All grades) Each fall, student pictures are taken for the KCS yearbook and are available for families to purchase. If the picture doesn't turn out as expected or the student is missing at the time it was to be taken, retakes will be scheduled for later in the fall.
See You At The Pole (Fifth – eighth grades) This student-initiated, organized, and led event brings students together at the school's flagpole on the third Wednesday in September to pray for KCS, friends, teachers, government, and nation.
Snow Days (All grades) Any time KCS needs to cancel school due to weather, that day will need to be made up later in the year. KCS has scheduled make-up days in March, April and May to help accommodate such a circumstance. If no days need to be made-up, these make-up days may be given back as days off!
Spirit Days/Weeks (First – eighth grades) To promote school spirit and give students a change of pace, KCS will conduct Spirit Days at various times throughout the year. Many times these may be coordinated with other events such as KCS Nights Out or athletic games or tournaments. Details will be announced as to what is acceptable for these days.
Spirit Wear KCS Spirit Wear can be purchased and ordered through Thee Zone, the KCS bookstore. Spirit wear can then be worn during designated Spirit Days throughout the school year.
Sports Awards Programs (Fifth – eighth grades) The KCS Athletic program recognizes the various teams that compete against other schools throughout the year. After each fall, winter and spring season, a simple awards program will be conducted to recognize these teams, athletes and achievements.
Stanford Testing (First & second grades) This national test is an evaluation tool used to determine how KCS students fare academically on a national scale. Tests are taken each spring at the same time as the Terra Nova test.
Students/Servants of The Month (Kindergarten – eighth grades) Each month, our elementary and middle school programs honor students for their Fruit of the Spirit-type displays/actions. The selected students will have their picture displayed at their classroom or hallway with a group picture often being printed in the local newspaper.
Teacher Appreciation Week (All grades) During Teacher Appreciation Week in early May, students and parents are encouraged to show your appreciation for the effort that teachers have made to educate students during the school year. Please be encouraged to keep this to simple and inexpensive tokens such as cards and/or small items.

Terra Nova Testing (Fourth & sixth grades) This national test is an evaluation tool used to determine how KCS students fare academically on a national scale. Tests are taken each spring at the same time as the Stanford test.
Teachers of the Year Award Our Parent-Teacher Fellowship (PTF) sponsors this award that is based on several attributes and is voted on by the teachers themselves. Money collected through the various KCS Nights Out, Candy-grams and Penny Wars is used to award one teacher from the elementary and another from middle school.

Tommy Holman Accelerated Reading Program KCS utilizes a nationally known accelerated reading program to assist students in developing strong reading skills. This extra-curricular program allows students to progress at their own rate, and has been renamed after Tommy Holman, a KCS student who unexpectedly went to be with the Lord during his kindergarten year.
Volunteer Recognition Day From classroom volunteers, to lunch and recess duty to library help and much, much more, in many ways, volunteers are the life-blood of KCS, and to demonstrate a portion of our gratitude, KCS conducts a time or recognition one afternoon during the last quarter of the school year. Washington DC Trip (Eighth grade) Each spring, usually late April or early May, eighth grade students will visit our nation's capital to see and learn about our government and how our country and processes were established.
