The Middle School Years - Preparation For Life

Renee Fishburn - Middle School Principal Middle School – "Brainwashing"

Psalm 51:6-7 "Surely you desire truth in the inner parts; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place. Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean, wash me and I will be whiter than snow."

Take a moment to imagine what would happen if a group of middle school students were given the freedom to play on a muddy sports field. After an hour or so, a water hose would be very helpful to wash off the layers of mud.

The purpose of a Christian education can be illustrated in the analogy of the mud washing. Instead of washing the outside of the student, God's Word is used to cleanse the mind and heart from the lies our culture has been teaching our children during their adolescent years.

Luke 2 teaches us how Jesus grew and KCS Middle School serves to guide our students in the same ways.

"Jesus grew in wisdom…"

There are lies in our culture that teach 5th – 8th graders that they are excused from using their minds intelligently; that because of their age, they are excused from loving God with all their minds; that they are excused from taking every thought captive and making it obedient to Christ.

KCS will teach the truth in the realms of wisdom.

"Jesus grew in stature…"

There are lies in our culture that teach 5th – 8th graders that their bodies are theirs to do with what they will; that athletic or attractive bodies are more deserving of love than those that aren't; that the outward appearance is more valued than the intellect or the heart.

KCS will teach the truth in the realms of stature…

"Jesus grew in favor with God and favor with man…"

There are lies in our culture that teach 5th – 8th graders that the reason for 'being good' is based on the reward you may receive; that sin is only bad if one gets in trouble; that recognition and praise from man is so important one should cheat just to make the 'honor roll'.

KCS will teach the truth in the realms of favor.

Our middle school will teach each subject area curriculum according to high academic standards but the qualifier that makes our school Christian is the brainwashing. May we be a blessing to our Lord and Savior with the daily cleansing or our minds. Matthew 22:37 "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind."

Middle School Guidance - Molding The Spirit   [Back to top]

Jason Van Curen - Guidance Molding the mind and body are important aspects of education, but without the proper application, a fulfilling life of service is difficult to experience. Kingsway Christian School devotes considerable time to instilling the importance of character, service, and leadership.

Daily Bible classes include Bible memorization and discussion to help understand scripture application. Weekly chapels consist of praise singing, skits and challenges by teachers, area pastors or other influential leaders. We believe in recognizing and rewarding good character as well with our monthly Student of the Month awards for each grade. These awards are often posted in the local newspaper.

Our K-Kids Club (grades 3-6) and our Middle School Chapel In Action (grades 5-8) are service oriented activities that focus on helping those in need. Sometimes this involves picking up trash at a local park, visiting a nursing home, helping in a downtown mission or participating in a canned goods drive to name a few.

Middle school students can participate in Student Leadership Council which is kicked-off with a leadership retreat in the fall where the students also plan for a monthly prayer breakfast. Others volunteer to help teachers at various times through the week or tutor some of the younger students. We also have a National Junior Honor Society which honors those students who achieve high academic and social ideals. The National Day of Prayer and See You At The Pole are also recognized by many students who believe that prayer is an essential element to daily character.

But before we can expect students to exhibit the Fruit of the Spirit, we know that it begins with our teachers and staff. Every teacher and staff member must have a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ and they are expected to maintain a high level of self discipline in their personal and professional lives. We desire to have the best role models for our students so they can see first-hand, how they should think and act. Unfortunately, in today’s society, many people believe that what you do in private has no bearing on what you do in your job. But we expect our staff to be above reproach and exhibit the same qualities that we expect our students to learn and live by, whether it be in the classroom, during extra-curricular activities, or at home.

We understand that the middle school years are one of the most pivotal times in a student’s life and that it’s vital to provide guidance as each student learns and develops his/her own talents, gifts and skills. We want each student to be used by God in a meaningful and fruitful way throughout their life in whatever field of endeavor they’re directed because with purpose and direction, they can make a difference in many different areas of society and the world.

General Exit Skills   [Back to top]

Distinguishing A Successful KCS Student

It takes years to educate a child and prepare them with the quality skills they’ll need for a fruitful and meaningful life, yet, unless these skills are carefully organized, they can easily be confusing. In conjunction with the standards for the State of Indiana, KCS has outlined the following guide to give parents a systematic roadmap for molding a successful and productive education. Using these guides have shown that students who experience a complete KCS education are very well prepared to experience a successful high school and college career wherever they go.
