Extracurricular Activities
KCS offers many extra activities which students can be part of to advance their skills and interests in particular areas. Some of these take place during the school day while others take place after school on a monthly or as-needed basis.
Student Leadership Council (grades 7 – 8) is a student organization that provides opportunities for students to develop leadership skills. This group is responsible for Prayer Breakfasts, planning and leading some Chapel services, and to serve as Ambassadors during several school events.
Teacher Aides (grades 6 – 8) is an opportunity for students to assist teachers throughout the school in various ways. This cultivates leadership growth & skills, as well as building student & teacher rapport.
Safety Patrol (grades 6 – 8) is an opportunity for students to assist with before and after school traffic flow. Students are taught procedures regarding proper traffic management, which encourages leadership growth.
Speech Team (grades 5-8) is an opportunity for middle school students to use their oratorical skills and talents in regional and state competitions.
Jr. National Honor Society (grades 6 –8) is a national organization whose membership is made of students with high academic achievement and who display qualities of service, leadership, character, and citizenship.
Young Astronauts (grades 1 – 8) is a national science club who meet once a month and focus on space science and the application of knowledge through experiments and projects. The culmination of each year is an optional and alternating trip to Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama, the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, or the Wright Patterson Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio.
Music Lessons (all grades) all students are given the opportunity to participate in music lessons offered by our staff. These lessons are private and are contracted by each individual teacher with the pupil/family. Lessons types usually available include: piano, voice, band, violin and drums.
K-Kids (grades 4 - 6) is coordinated through the local Kiwanis Club of Avon and provides opportunities for students to plan, organize and perform community service. This is a great way to plant the seeds of leadership and teaching students the importance of giving-back to the community. This is the first K-Kids club organized in the entire state of Indiana and the ninth club in the country!
Art Festival - students present their artwork and compete for display at the district level.
Math Olympics - students are given the opportunity to fine-tune their math skills and compete against other students in a state meet.
Music Competitions - choir and band students participate in group, and individual competitions.
Science Fair - students create displays explaining an area of science. All students in grades 4, 6 and 8 are required to participate. Students in other grades are welcome to participate at their own choosing.
Speech Meet - students in grades 1 - 8 prepare and present speeches.
Spelling Bee - students in grades 1 - 8 compete within the school. Winners represent KCS at the Regional "Bee".
Success in Reading (SIR)/Book-It programs - students at various grade levels are encouraged to read books to win individual and class prizes.
Chapel in Action – Once each grading period, middle school students participate in community service in a variety of ways from picking up trash, raking leaves or shoveling snow of shut-ins, visiting retirement homes and generally assisting others in need.
